Breastfeeding support
Breastfeeding support
Breastfeeding gives babies the best start in life. The Department of Health recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life. Breast milk gives babies all the nutrients they need and helps protect them from infection and diseases. Breastfeeding helps protect your baby against:
- ear infections
- gastro-intestinal infections
- chest infections
- urine infections
- childhood diabetes
- eczema
- obesity
- asthma
Breastfeeding has benefits for mothers too. It helps protect mothers against ovarian and breast cancer and protects against weak bones later in life. Women who breastfeed return to their pre-pregnancy figure faster.
Camden baby feeding service
Our Camden baby feeding service is a service available to mums who live in Camden and who want help with feeding their baby. This includes help with breastfeeding but also safe bottle feeding and introducing solids. For more information about the Camden baby feeding service please download our service leaflet from the box on the right.
What does the service provide?
The Camden baby feeding service trains local mums to help other mums in Camden with feeding their babies. These mums are trained to offer women information and support in a variety of settings such as, in postnatal wards, clinics, drop-ins, baby cafes and mum's homes. Their role does not include giving advice and they do not tell women what to do, but they can offer suggestions. Mums are trained to listen non-judgementally and support a mum however she chooses to feed her baby.
Our trained mums speak a number of different languages; come from a wide range of backgrounds with very different life experiences. What they all bring is a willingness to train and volunteer to give their time to other mums, to listen to them, care about them and support them in those exceptional first few months with a new baby.

How can I become a peer supporter?
If you are interested in helping other local mums with feeding their babies you can apply to do a training course. The course is 2 days a week for 7 weeks and includes topics such as breastfeeding support –with a focus on positioning and attachment, child protection training and introducing solids and healthy eating for babies. The first 24 hours of the course is accredited by the Open College Network and is provided by the charity, The Breastfeeding Network. It includes a monthly two hour supervision session and also access to a Breastfeeding Network tutor for clinical support.
